Can’t Follow Through on Plans? ChatGPT Can Help You Understand Why

Ep 11: Mind + Machine, AI For Personal Growth and Development

Identify Fears, Mental Blocks or Uncertainties

Imagine you’re an ideas person, and they come to you in the middle of the night when you least expect it, or maybe when you’re on a walk. These ideas are amazing, and you just know if you could bring them into reality, they would be absolutely incredible.

Yet you struggle. Moving the idea through all the steps required to become a reality is something you haven’t yet figured out how to do. You haven’t yet mastered that.

One day, you’re walking down the street, and you come across a lamp. You’ve seen a Aladin before, so you decide, “Hey, I’ll give this lamp a rub.” What do you know? Out pops a genie, and the genie says, “My name is OpenAI, and I am here to grant you the very wish you most desire.”

You think about it for a little bit. What do I want? What do I most desire? You decide, “I really want a tool that can help me to plan out, in the most specific detail, the steps it takes to move my ideas into reality.”

OpenAI, the genie, says, “Of course! Here it is: ChatGPT.” And so there it is—the tool you needed. You get started, make all these plans, and what do you know? You come across another hurdle. Even with the plans and the exact steps, you still struggle to do what is needed to achieve that reality and bring your idea to life.

At that exact moment, there was another twist. This is exactly the story of what happened to a Reddit user, and I’m going to tell you all about it.

This Reddit user created a post titled: “ChatGPT Has Completely Opened My Eyes to What Is Wrong with Me,” written by USCSS Nostromo 2122. They shared how they’ve always struggled with having great ideas but never followed through because they didn’t have the answers. With ChatGPT, they could tell it their idea, and it would tell them how to achieve it. Sounds awesome, right?

Well, not quite. They realized that even with the answers and solutions to things they wanted to try and do, they still weren’t following through. They shared:

“Even with a great idea, a foolproof plan, and cheery support from ChatGPT, I am not attempting to do any of the ideas. Apparently, it wasn’t a lack of having a good plan that was stopping me—it was something else. I’m thinking laziness, procrastination, fear of success, or failure—or a combination of all of those. Anyway, thankful for ChatGPT because now I get to use it to overcome whatever bottleneck is keeping me from moving forward. Happy New Year, everyone.”

It’s an interesting post because it highlights that having all the answers doesn’t necessarily remove the barriers to achieving our goals. Even with ChatGPT being an amazing tool, we can still fail to utilize it to its full potential.

But wait—there’s another genie in this story. A Reddit user named ElevatedMotion commented with an amazing prompt that not only helped the original poster but could help you too. The prompt was:

“Ask me high-level questions to [insert goal here]. For example, ‘Ask me high-level questions to figure out why I struggle to take action on my plans that I put a lot of time into.’”

ElevatedMotion explained that ChatGPT would then ask detailed questions. If you answer them honestly, it will provide very specific reasons that resonate with you. Then, you can break it down further by re-entering the prompt with a new focus, such as:

“Ask me high-level questions to figure out why I have a fear of failure.”

They shared that using this strategy, they were able to create a custom time management system tailored to their struggles with ADHD, one they’ve actually been able to stick to. They found this strategy much more effective than simply generating plans, which can often lead to information overload.

So, go ahead—give it a try yourself. I’d love to hear if it helps you.

If this is an interesting topic for you, make sure you tune in on Thursday, when we’ll cover procrastination in more detail and explore how ChatGPT can help us overcome it. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to catch the next episode. See you soon!
